Mary Frances Mitchell-Pierce
Mary Frances Mitchell was born December 8th 1926, In Suffolk, Virginia.
She was the daughter of Ervin Mitchell And Josie Arrington-Mitchell. Her early education was in the public schools; and she furthered her education at Virginia State University in Richmond, an historically black institution, founded in 1882 it received university status in 1979. She received her degree in Nursing as an LPN Nurse. She Moved from Virginia to New York where She worked at various locations throughout New York City For over 40 years.
On August 9, 1947 she married Walter Lee Pierce….of Birmingham, Alabama. They had 3 sons and two daughters, Deborah Ann, Ronald Aaron, Gwendolyn Maria and Michael Adam. Son, Walter Jr. preceded them in death in 1951.
Remembering Those Left In The South, mom and dad with others, were “Fighters For Freedom” Sending money, food and clothing to help needy children. Something she was very passionate about, always wanting to help wherever and whenever she could.
She and our family members joined St. Luke A.M.E. Church in the year of 1952. We moved our membership to St. Stephen Community A.M.E. Church in 1966. Mom served in several capacities. She served as a Stewardess, Assistant Class Leader, Missionary, Choir Member; and, was a member of the Nurse’s Unit which she started. She served faithfully along with her family. Her commitment to serve was truly from her heart. She knew, she had no doubt, how blessed she was. She could play the piano; and, one favorite song to play was “Have a Little Talk with Jesus”. She also liked to play, “He Looked Beyond My Faults and Saw My Needs”.
When her health began to fail; and, her sweetheart, Reverend Walter Pierce Preceded her in death, she too became homebound; and, was unable to attend worship services. She was able to at home with our church school through technology and other worship services via television.
On the afternoon of August 15, 2024, God in His infinite Grace and Mercy Called His Child Home. No words can describe how much we will miss her; but, we know without a doubt, It Is Well With Her Soul. She leaves to mourn, her children, In-laws, grands, great grands cousins, nieces, nephews; and, a host of friends and loved ones. Take your rest Mommy, You fought a good fight, you finished the course, you kept the faith. We will always love you; but, God loved you best. To God Be The Glory!
